Discretionary Name Clarification PDF Print E-mail

.ie is a managed registry and therefore all applicants are required to demonstrate a claim to each domain name. In order to make it clear as to the requirements for each type of applicant, we have many pre-defined classes and categories of application. Each application has a domain class and category. For example, if you are a company who wishes to register your companyname.ie, then the class would be ‘Body Corporate’ and the category would be Corporate name’, or if you are an individual requesting your own personal domain name, you would make your application under the ‘Natural Person’ class and ‘Personal Name’ category.

Because we cannot account for every type of application in our pre-defined categories, we have a category called ‘Discretionary name’ which should only be used in cases where the domain name application does not fall within any of the other pre-defined categories (listed here).

It is worth noting at this point that if there is a direct link between a company/business name and the domain name they want to register, the domain name can be applied for under the discretionary category but no supporting information is required. For example if No.1 Car Insurance Limited wanted to register motorquote.ie - this would be classed as a discretionary name, but the link between the business name and the domain is quite clear so supporting information would not be required.

The below summary indicates the type of discretionary names most commonly applied for and what the IEDR‘s requirements are in each case. The summary is broken down by each type of applicant, starting with the most common.
